    Making Lemonade from Life’s Lemons

What do you do when the dream you’ve been immersed in, counting on, and striving for fades to the point of vanishing before your tear-filled eyes? What do you do when your dream is taken away from you? You dream the dream again, and you go after it with a hunger that burns like the sun inside of you. You are the candle and the flame – you are the light! Dreams don’t die they transform and, when the time is right, they manifest.

    Wishes Require Work

I have stated often, “Failure is not an option,” however, I have to admit that when I accepted I would not be physically able to run in The New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 5, 2017, I did feel like a failure – the biggest failure in the world. Did I not work hard enough? Did I not train well? Did I wait too long to go to the doctor? Did my stubbornness rob me of my dream? Each of these painful questions plagued me. Yet, I realized for me to accept my present situation as a failure, it would be a lie.

    When Lightning Strikes Your Rainbow

I cannot begin to express how devastated I feel. As hard as I have tried – as much as I have done – as much as I have prayed and asked the Universe for guidance and healing -- I cannot get my knee better in time for The New York City Marathon.

    Re-Envision for the Long Run

You have to stretch, and you have to “see” the race in your mind before you take a single step at the starting line. However, after the months of mental, physical, and spiritual preparation to run the race of your dreams, you may be confronted with fear and pain – you have to re-envision for the long run.

    Working Through the Pain

Three weeks have passed since I last shared with you my story. I have been working through the pain and nursing a very sore and stubborn knee injury caused by my intense training regime for The New York City Marathon . . . And created by inescapable arthritis which has slowly and, very ruthlessly, “worked on” my knees. I have struggled with #whatsnext . . . #whyme . . . #whynow.

    When the Universe Comes Calling

s this all a dream? Or, has my dream become my reality? Well, I pinch myself everyday as I think of running in the New York City Marathon on November 5, 2017. Running in the New York City Marathon has been on my Bucket List since 2005, but as I have come to realize, the Universe knows what you are ready for and when you are ready for it. For me, my current life seems nothing short of a miracle, and I know that the power of intentionality is empowering me to re-envision and re-invent my life to become limitless.

Each day as I train race day quickly approaches, and I realize even more that everything in life is intertwined. I have been engaging in my own “spiritual” re-investment during my training schedule and this definitely includes a concentrated focus on my purpose, my place in the universe, and living with intention. Long-distance running is my moving meditation; it clears my head, provides me focus, increases my energy, and charges my spirit.

This week has been a particularly hard week for my training. My long run on Saturday was a killer, and no matter how I reflect on and analyze it, I cannot articulate the reason it was so arduous, so difficult, and so exhausting -- I only slightly changed my route and added a few more hills.

Breaking Thru Limitations to a Limitless Life

The first full marathon I ran was the Disney Marathon in 2005, but two other marathons remain on my Bucket List – the New York City Marathon and the Chicago Marathon. That is not to say that I have always been in the best shape to run either of them – until now. So, here I go – breaking through my own self-imposed limitations to a limitless life.

My pen is poised to check off the New York City Marathon from my Bucket List this November 2017. And, look out Chicago, Cindy is heading your way in 2018!

Entrance into the New York City Marathon is based upon a lottery, and it is an extremely tough marathon to get into without qualifying. At this point, with my non-stop work schedule qualifying for entrance into this marathon wasn’t going to happen. I have become a runner -- a runner who runs a moderate, steady pace.

    Break Thru & Run

There is no better Re-Invest-ment than reinvesting in yourself.

I am a runner, and I Re-Invest in myself through my new habit – running. I have been running consistently since February 2017. My run-walk of only a mile has evolved into a Sunday ten mile run.

Each day I run in the morning, and this simple, practical, healthy habit is now a simple, practical, healthy routine that I cannot live without. My business partners have unfortunately seen a very different Cindy when I have missed my run. And, I now get early morning text reminders asking me whether I have gone on my run. And, I am quite sure that on the other end there is a sigh of relief when I answer, "Yes, I just got back from my run. I ran three miles today, and I didn't even walk.”

My run is part of my personal habit to fight the swirl in my own life. My overall health, my business, and my relationships have become so much richer, vibrant, and purposeful since I established my run into my daily routine. Honestly, it is an activity in my day-to-day life that I cannot live without now; however, less than a year ago, I would not have been able to have even imagined putting on running clothes, running shoes, and closing my front door behind me with the anticipation of running a minimum of three miles.

Until this I had never run in hot weather, and would never have thought about running at 11 a.m. on a Sunday when it was 92 degrees and the temperature was increasing. Yet, now I cannot imagine not running regardless of the temperature or the weather. My expectations for myself have changed – I cannot imagine not going on my run. Not only do I run, I smile when I run. If you followed me you may see me doing some strange fist pumps in the middle of the run or other crazy things where I am expressing my excitement about how good this makes me feel. The clarity I have been able to accomplish has been amazing as I have gone through this process. This is my #onestepmore.

I am not advocating that everyone runs. I am advocating that you find something that allows you to Re-Invest in yourself. One of the key factors here is you can't separate yourself from your business. You have to be able to do something to Re-Invest in yourself. You have to give yourself space to create. You have to be able to gain the clarity. Re-Invest in crucial to the success of your business.

Similarly, in my business, my expectations for my business and my clients have changed. There is no room for inconsistency in my life. There is no room for failure in my business. There are no excuses for my clients and my doing all I can to ensure their success in their businesses and in their lives. I have been and continue to be the test case for my R3 Process and #onestepmore and #whatsnext.

There is no better investment than reinvesting in yourself and your business.

So, what do you do to Re-Invest in yourself and your business? Please let me know in the comments below.

    Break-Thru to #Whatsnext

The R3 Process is a synergistic process designed to maximize results. The process sounds like hard work, and it is. Yet, there is a joy discovered in each phase of the process as you near your business and personal goals. Your business and your life deserve your hard work, and the hard work should never rob you of your joy.

I made the R3 Process my business model and my life model. As I integrated the R3 Process into my life, my life became the process. I quickly discovered that I had more energy and more confidence. My creativity and my thinking were supercharged, and I truly looked around and realized that I was creating a life in living color.

I remember starting out with a new client, and I immediately engaged in a critical conversation that cut to the heart of the issues plaguing the client. Typically, I like to get more of a feel for my clients before I engaged in the critical conversations with them. In the past, I lacked the confidence to engage my clients in this way. However, significant changes had taken place in my business and my life, and I approached the moment with a confidence and a growth mindset like I had never had before. I knew this client’s company was in dire trouble, and it would be a disservice to this client to approach him with kid gloves – I realized quickly that he needed a no nonsense approach and a process that would yield the most significant results in the least amount of time.

Clearly, he and his business needed to consider #onestepmore and #whatsnext, and those two stages are embedded in the R3 Process. I needed him to answer the questions, “What do you see as your role in the business?” and “How are you significant in this project going forward?
As he formulated his responses, I saw the light come on. He got it! His answers not only helped him to express what his role was but also gave me the opportunity to listen and to clarify for him his role in both the business and in the project as it moved forward.

Clarifying roles, processes, and expected outcomes helped him reinvest in a growth mindset. He now felt he was an integral part of the process, not an impediment to the process. The Re-Invest phase of the R3 Process keeps you focused on the vision as well as focused on the dream -- where it all began. The Re-Invest process reinvigorates the business and propels the business owner forward with a renewed sense of purpose, direction, and energy.

I won’t mislead you by making you believe the process was easy, working with the client was easy, or putting mechanisms in place to move his business forward was easy. But, I assure you that the R3 Process works, and it worked for this client. Communication about the process, and a commitment to the process yields results. And, I am the living embodiment and the proof of the results of the process.

The Re-Invest phase of the R3 Process reawakened my “fire in the belly.” I was finally able to get out of my own way and acknowledge that what I had discovered worked for me when I was in the deepest hole I had ever been, would work for anyone ready to and willing to embrace the process and drive their business and their life to Success.

    My Break-Thru Moment

Re-Invent drives innovation. We often think that in order to innovate we have to do something different. In reality, it does not have to be a radical departure from the original. We have to first Re-Envision the ways clients and customers can use our product or service in a fresh and innovative way. We are setting the stage for the future. Also, during this stage of the R3 Process, it is important to take a fresh look at your product or service as well as yourself and your life.

Re-Invent is an exciting phase of the R3 Process that engages you and that challenges you to seize the opportunity to reframe and reconstruct a product, a service, or a process that originated with you – that was born from your vision. It may not be totally about how “to build a better mousetrap,” but it is about how can this mousetrap be so much more impactful and beneficial in the market and for your customer and client.

As I shared in Breaking Through the Darkness, you have to examine every limiting believe and mental model you have. My own life and business served as the test case. I fought with myself, and held on so tight to my originating vision for my business that my greatest challenge was to pivot and examine my business and my life with a drive to make both so much more, so much more vibrant, and so much more purposeful.

I am an Engineer by training. I was the only woman in my class who endured the grueling Engineering program under the direction of male Engineers who stated very clearly at the beginning of our first class in the program: “Women do not belong in an Engineering program, and I doubt you ladies in this class will ever graduate with a degree from this program of study. You are better served to prepare yourself to raise children and take care of a home.” Clearly, female engineers have to be tough and cannot be vulnerable.

So, when things started to fall apart with the business and my life I wasn’t sure how to react.
I had never experienced a moment quite this bad in my business and my life – never imagined such a moment was possible for me. I’ve always been the one who is in control, giving the orders, making the difficult decisions, taking the hits and never tapping out. I kept looking at my life and my business in this dark moment, and what I was seeing wasn’t Cindy and it wasn’t Business Break-Thru. I was confused, frustrated, angry, and felt empty and alone – had the Universe abandoned me or had I abandoned myself?

The most frightening moment of all was feeling like I had lost control of everything – my business, my relationships, my purpose, my intent, and my direction. I was in the middle of a crisis.

Sitting in Starbucks looking through notes and trying to figure out my next move, I couldn’t see my business. What happened to my vision? How did I wander off mission? How do I save my business? How do I recover this? What is wrong with me? How did I lose control of something I had created? This doesn’t happen to me, not me!

But, in reality, it happened. There I was in Starbucks, and one more Grande iced skinny cinnamon dolce latte was going to break me out of this funk. As I was sitting there contemplating throwing in the towel, I noticed in the pile of notes and napkins that had become a mountain I did not know how to climb, a pattern. A path emerged in the midst of the chaos of my randomly written notes – Re-Envision, Re-Invent, and Re-Invest. It was so very simple, and so very clear.

It was not until that moment of complete desperation and frustration that I could see my path and what I was about to craft and shape into my new business and life. I had conquered my own Everest piled on a Starbucks table.

    Break the Mold & Break-Thru

How many times have you had a pair of shoes, jeans or t-shirt that you just clung to and couldn’t seem to part with. No matter how worn they got you still wanted to just keep wearing them. How many times do we do the same thing in our businesses and our life. We cling to what makes us comfortable. We cling to what is familiar. We can’t get out of our comfort zone and we are killing our business as well as our life.

Every business will reach a ceiling that is difficult to maneuver around or get through. A significant change must occur in order to move forward. We know at the gut level that something has to change, but we not certain what it is. We become frustrated trying to figure this out. We continue to try things some help, some hinder but nothing seems to really get us where we need to go. Or gives us the sustainable change we are looking for. And we can’t put our finger on why. We continue to be frustrated by it all and may even question why we started the business in the first place…and more importantly do we want to continue.

This is when it is time to Re-Invent. Re-Inventing is about seeing what sometimes you can’t see. It’s about finding the answer when you don’t have the answer. It’s about refocusing when you can’t seem to focus. It’s about moving forward when you don’t believe you can. And, like your business, it’s about you having the resources when you reach a plateau and lack the skills, the energy, and the information to break through that plateau and continue to climb.

Re-invent is the critical phase which puts into place the structures to support your vision. The “thought work” has been initiated and now it’s time to closely examine everything about your business. Ask yourself, “What is great about my product or process?” “What value does my product or process have in the current market?” “What current trends will shape the future of the market and my place in the market?” “What will make my product or process more appealing to the consumer?”

Re-Inventing is not just about the business either. It’s about you. Jim Collins shares in his book Good to Great: “You have to figure out what you’re are genetically encoded to do.” Re-Inventing is about really examining that statement. The business will never be more than you believe it can be. During Re-Invent you have to examine every limiting belief and mental model you have… and believe me it is brutal. I will share with you my story about Re-Inventing in the next blog. Stay tuned….

What comes out of Re-Inventing is a business that reflects your strengths and ensures you can accomplish your vision. During this phase, we develop your business model, determine partnerships that will move your business forward, design processes that allow you to work on the business, not in the business, and ensure we have the right people in the right places for maximum effect and efficiency. We design a scalable business that embraces risk, that flexes as the market changes, and that continues to grow. Now you have clarity and are ready to Re-Invest

    Breaking Thru the Darkness

Thanksgiving of 2016 was the darkest day of my life. I was alone. My son was spending Thanksgiving with his dad. I ate Thanksgiving lunch by myself, and I tried to pretend it didn’t matter.

At that moment, I was at my heaviest weight and had no idea how or plan to lose the weight, and, honestly, I did not have any real desire to lose the weight. Why should I? Who would care? I was on blood pressure medication and had just been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. I was in the depth of my own personal darkness with no idea how to break out, and I believed I could not get better and was destined to live with failing health and more medications to come. And, I was turning 61 the next day. I was miserable.

Also, I looked around and my business was non-existent. I had taken a contract job as a temporary fix, and I had placed my own business, my own dream on a shelf. I was making money and keeping the lights on as a contractor, but I felt terrible physically and emotionally. The salary as a contractor was the only thing satisfying in my life. I had convinced myself that my life would be what it was. I was not convinced that I could really change my life, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to -- I was doing a good job of fooling myself and everyone around me that my life was good. Not only good, but also great; I was living a lie.

What happened next was a critical reality check that changed my life forever. I got a text from someone who had been sending me messages on Facebook. I firmly believe that people come into your life for a reason. And, this person definitely appeared for a reason. During our conversation, he asked: “Don’t you miss being held and being a part of a relationship?” Not really sure why this question in particular was one to make me examine my life and business, but it did.

Now you’re asking yourself – “What does that have to do with my business?” For some reason, this question awakened me like a brilliantly bright light breaking through the most impenetrable darkness. It awakened me not only to examine my personal life but also to examine my business life. I was awakened to re-envision my business and my life and, therefore, see my business and my life in a new way.

While I was sitting on the couch responding to his messages, it became so clear to me that I was supposed to do something bigger with my life and my business. I was destined from that point to do bigger and better things!

Everything in my life changed from that moment. I had been a person who ate starches and sweets all day long. I could not even stand the thought of putting those things in my body. I started working out and running again. I now run over to 20 miles a week. I am off all medication, and I have lost in excess of 50 lbs. More importantly I have Re-Envisioned my business and my life. I want to be the catalyst to help you Re-Envision your business and your life.

    Another Break-Thru

Six broken ribs did not slow me down or deter me from re-envisioning my business and the trajectory of my business.

Recovering from a fall that broke six ribs and that left both my body and ego bruised, gave me time to reflect on my own business as well as to reflect on areas in my own that tomorrow arrived and I ended up in the local Emergency Room, I was unprepared for my encounter with the "Cindy" I had ignored for weeks and months.

3 Approaches to Gardening that work for Growing your Business

I am an avid gardener as you can see from the pictures above. – the pictures above are taken on my deck. One of the challenges of gardening is dealing with what nature throws at you. But the reward is the beauty that you create. It is the same as running your business.

You have to be ready to pivot – Just like growing a business you have to be willing to adjust at all times. I have been raising flowers on my back deck for several years and this year is the best so far. What I have learned over the years is how much water, fertilizer, etc. to use. I have tried a lot of different things some good results some bad but I always learned something.

The same when growing your business. You have to be willing to course correct along the way. You have to be able to do something new and decide if you are obtaining the results you want then adjust accordingly.

You have to have a system- I have several systems in my garden that allows it to grow and flourish. I have a drip irrigation which waters it for me. I have reminders in my calendar for fertilizing, spraying and other maintenance tasks.

Having systems is paramount to having a growing business. And it lessens the dependence on you. You have to be confident that the business can go on without you for a period. You need to have indicators that show you what is happening and when you need to take action. If you haven’t put these in place, you have just given yourself a job.

You have to be grateful and appreciate what you have done – One of the great things about gardening is you see your results. When you see the results, you cannot help but stop and be grateful.

In business, you sometimes lose sight of how far you have come. You may become overwhelmed with the day to day and forget to look what you have accomplished. Take the time to be grateful, take the time to appreciate what you have done and to appreciate those who have helped you along the way.

I would love to hear your comments on these ideas. Please let me know what you have done to grow your business or what you now see you may need to do.

From "Always On" to "Space for Me"
In a 24 hour world, how do we find time to be able to find "Space for Me?" A trend I would like to see for #Bigideas2016 is the finding "space for me" from being "always on." The onset of the digital devices has overtaken our lives where we have no down time. We are regularly called upon to answer, respond and continually provide service. We need to improve on creating space for ourselves.

Put Your Own Oxygen Mask on First
As a former road warrior, I use a lot of airplane references but not one rings truer to me than the safety instruction ....Put your oxygen mask on first...How many times do we just not do this. We continue to deplete our reserves until we become sick, depressed and lethargic. For your #Break-Thru Strategy, 2016 personal goals need to be an important element. Whether it is health, family connections, personal connections, vacations, etc. You need to include them and give them priority, not an if "I get around to it".

Does Your Business Run Your Life?
One day last week I called an Uber car to take me to pick up my son’s car from the dealership. Yes, I am such a good mom but that is an entirely different post.
